The election took place on November 6, 1928. The national result was that Hoover won in a landslide with 444 electoral votes to Smith’s 87. The popular vote was also a landslide, with the Republicans receiving 21,427,123 (58.2%) to the Democrats 15,015,464 (40.8%). Pennsylvania gave all 38 of its electoral votes to Hoover.

On November 8, 1928, the Elizabethville Echo published the vote tallies for Elizabethville and surrounding districts:

There was also a brief explanation of the vote:

With more than four hundred forty electoral votes certain, Herbert Hoover is assured as the thirty-first President of the United States after a most bitterly fought campaign.  Governor Alfred E. Smith, despite this, polled the larges popular vote of any Democratic nominee during the last four presidential campaigns.  Never in American political history was so heavy a vote recorded.

On November 9, 1928, the Lykens Standard published its opinion of the election with the following banner headline and brief story:

HOOVER CHOICE OF MAJORITY

SMITH WORST DEFEATED CANDIDATE IN HISTORY;

RECORD VOTE IS POLLED THROUGHOUT NATION

With substantially more than 444 electoral votes and the greatest Republican victory in history, the people of the United States made their choice for the Presidency, Tuesday, by electing the Hoover-Curtis ticket….
