MRS. JOSEPH P. LYTER – FIRST WOMAN RESIDENT OF ENDERS, PASSES AWAY
Mrs. Elizabeth Lyter, of whose illness mention was made by our Enders correspondent last week, has since passed away and was buried there on Saturday. She was aged 92 years.
Deceased was the first woman that lived at Jacksonville, as the town was then called, and her husband, Joseph P. Lyter, was the first blacksmith to sound the anvil at that place. These parents, with their three children, John H. Lyter, Peter B. Lyter, and Jane Lyter, moved to Jacksonville from the Elder farm in Lykens Valley. Emanuel Lyter, the veterinarian, now living at Berrysburg, was born there.
Mrs. Lyter was a good woman, kind and generous to a fault, of a cheerful disposition, always turning up the bright side of life, a consistent and faithful member of the Reformed Church. Rev. G. W. Spotts officiated at the funeral. Quite a number of people from Hummelstown, Harrisburg, Dauphin, Millersburg, Elizabethville and Berrysburg attended the funeral. The surviving children are Mrs. Jane Witmer of Dauphin, John H. Lyter of Enders, and Emanuel Lyter of Berrysburg.
