Elizabethville Garment Company – Early History

A photograph from 1969 of sewing machine operators at the Elizabethville Garment Company, southeast corner of Broad and Franklin Streets, Elizabethville. None of the people pictured are identified.

Dresses were first made in Elizabethville September 30, 1929, when the Elizabethville Dress Company began its business in the building on Pine Avenue where Ray C. Collier previously made hosiery.  The company employed 39 men and women and operations were supervised by Sidney Press and Julius Shapiro.  In July 1933, a 36 foot addition was built t the building at which time the business was operated by Myer Budnick and Mary Budnick with 70 employees.

Herbert Geronzik came to Elizabethville in 1944 and worked for the Budnicks until 1954 when he assumed management.  In 1956 he erected a one story concrete block building 60 feet by 100 feet on the southeast corner of Broad and Franklin Streets into which the factory was moved in October.  Operating under the name of Elizabethville Garment Company the firm employs fifty people and makes children’s dresses exclusively.  Charlotte Messersmith and May Hoy have worked for the Dress Company since its beginning in 1929.
