Elizabethville – Man Almost Decapitated in Auto Wreck, 1924

This story is from the Lykens Standard, August 8, 1924:

HEAD ALMOST SEVERED BY WINDSHIELD IN AUTO WRECK

Entertain Hope For Recovery of Paul Cyckowski – 7 Others Injured Slightly

As a result of an auto collision which occurred at east end of Elizabethville, near entrance to Memorial Park, Friday evening of last week, Paul Cykowski of this place [Lykens] is in the Harrisburg hospital in a precarious condition, suffering with a severe laceration on the back of his neck which merely missed the jugular vein, spinal cord and windpipe.

Cyckowski in company of Eugene Flynn of this place [Lykens], the latter driving a Franklin touring car, were headed for Elizabethville.  When passing the entrance to Memorial Park, they were running at an excessive rate of speed and were signaled to by William Loudermilch, constable, to decrease speed.  Flynn, unaware of who was signaling turned to see who the party was and the car ran to the opposite side of the road where it collided with an Overland being driven by the Rev. A. E. Miller of Wiconisco.

In the Miller car was Rev. Miller and his two children of Wiconisco; the Rev. and Mrs. Tiel of Tower City, and Miss Bonawitz of Loyalton.  The party was returning to their homes after spending the day at Lewistown Evangelical Orphanage.

When the collision occurred, Cykowski was thrown through the windshield of his car, the glass almost severing his head.  He was unconscious for a while.  Dr. Morgan was called to the scene of the accident and dressed the injury, after which Cyckowski was rushed to the Harrisburg Hospital in the Susquehanna Collieries Company ambulance, where his condition was reported as very critical.

Flynn, who was driving the Cyckowski machine, sustained minor contusions and lacerations while Mrs. Tiel was not injured.  Miss Bonawitz suffered a severe contusion of the forehead and slight lacerations.

Rev. Miller’s sedan was badly wrecked, the light fenders and both wheels being torn from the left side of the body. The glass was also broken in the body of the machine.

Cyckowski’s car was damaged to the extent of a broken left light, fender and left front wheel.

With exception of Cyckowski, all who figured in the accident are about again, and hopes are now entertained for Cyckowski, as none of the important blood vessels were severed, although he suffered greatly from loss of blood.
