Halifax Chair Seat Factory Fire, 1926

FIRE WIPES OUT FACTORY HERE TODAY

MILLERSBURG, December 23 [1926] — The Halifax Chair Seat Company’s factory here was destroyed by fire this morning.

The building was burned to the ground and the contents destroyed.

John H. Klingman is the owner and manager of the company, which makes chair and chair seats.

Adjoining factory buildings, including the Brubaker Brothers die works, were threatened by the flames and flying embers from the burning chair factory.

Sparks from the chair factory ignited a coal shed of the Boyer Coal Yard, along side, but the flames were discovered before any damage was done there.

Three streams were used by Millersburg fire fighters but the flames had gained too much headway to save and part of the factory.

The plant employed about twenty-five persons.

The fire is believed to have been caused by defective wiring in the paint room where the flames were discovered by the workmen. Paints and oils were ignited and the fire quickly got beyond control of the plant’s fire fighting apparatus.

The plant was a two-story frame building, approximately forty feet wide and 120 feet long.

in addition to making chair seats the company also manufactured wood novelties and it was said that thousands of dollars in orders were on hand.

No estimate of the loss could be given by Klingman today. He said the building was covered by insurance, but said there would be some loss because of the materials and stock being destroyed.
