Harry W. Johns (1881-1917) – Pennsylvania Railroad Brakeman

From the Altoona Times, April 6, 1917:

JOHNS

Harry William Johns, a Pennsy brakeman, residing at Pinecroft, died at the Altoona Hospital at 2:15 o’clock yesterday afternoon of pulmonary edema, following an attack of typhoid fever.  He had been ill but a short time.

Deceased was born at Lykens, Dauphin County, April 21, 1880, being a son of Henry L. Johns and Sarah Johns.  He is survived by his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Elizabeth Kinzler and seven children as follows:  Robert Johns, Alice Johns, Henry Johns, Rose Johns, Charles Johns, and Elizabeth Johns, all at home.  A son, Harry W. Johns, died on March 14 [1917], of typhoid fever, and one of the daughters is an inmate of the institution at the present time, suffering from the malady.  He is also survived by his parents and three brothers:  George Johns and Lloyd Johns, of Pittsburgh, and Edward Johns, of Detroit.

He was employed for a number of years as a freight brakeman on the Middle Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church at Lykens; Lodge No. 174, B. of R. T., and the P. R. R. Relief.

The body was given in charge of Undertakers Roher and Mank to be processed for burial.  The remains will be shipped to Lykens tomorrow forenoon, at 11:10 o’clock, where short funeral services will be held and interment made.

From the Harrisburg Evening News, April 11, 1917:

FUNERAL OF HENRY JOHNS

WICONISCO, April 11 [1917] – Funeral services were held here for Harry Johns, late of Altoona.  He was a former resident of this place.  He is the son of Mrs. Joseph Hand and is survived by his mother, three brothers, his wife and eight children.  Rev. L. H. Yergey officiated at the funeral.
