Harvey S. Matter (1891-1948) – Clerk in County Quarter Sessions Court

HARVEY S. MATTER PASSED AWAY WEDNESDAY

Harvey S. Matter, 57, Deputy Clerk in the Office of Dauphin County Clerk of Quarter Sessions Court, died in the Harrisburg Hospital about 5:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, following a brief illness.  He had been admitted to the hospital on Monday.

Mr. Matter was a son of the late Daniel S. Matter and Kate [Lehman] Matter, and was a native of Lykens.  He had been a resident of Elizabethville about thirty-six years and had been identified with a number of civic activities.

Mr. Matter was a former Manager of the Wiconisco Telephone and Telegraph Company, and had engaged in the electrical contracting business in this community [Elizabethville] sixteen years.  He also operated a restaurant nine years, and since January of this year had served as deputy clerk and non-support officer in the Dauphin County Courthouse.

Mr. Matter was a former president and Fire Chief of the Reliance Hose Company, and president of the Elizabethville Firemen’s Relief Association.

He also served for nine years as Secretary of the Elizabethville Borough Council, and four years as Justice of the Peace, offices which he held at the time of his death.  He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Dauphin County Volunteer Firemen’s Association.

Survivors are his wife who was formerly Miss Lulu K. Gaupp; two daughters, Mrs. E. L. Snyder, of Wernersville and Miss Violet Matter, at home; one son, Derald Matter of Elizabethville, and two granddaughters, Audrey Snyder and Judith Matter.

Other survivors are three brothers and four sisters, Edward Matter, Ralph Matter, and Daniel Matter, and Mrs. George Moss, all of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Mrs. Mark Zerfing, Elizabethville; Mrs. Ernest Spoonhour, Camp Hill, R. D., and Mrs. Bruce Atticks of Progress.

Services will be held from the Buffington Funeral Home, West Main Street, at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon.  Rev. H. S. Kiefer, retired Evangelical United Brethren pastor of Lykens, will officiate, and interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Buffington Funeral Home Saturday evening from 7 to 9 o’clock.
