Heisler’s Store & Halifax Post Office

An undated photo post card view of Heisler’s Store (left) and the Halifax Post Office, Halifax, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

The caption for this photo:

HEISLER’S CASH GROCERY – U. S. POST OFFICE

Heisler’s Cash Grocery store is pictured left of the Halifax Post office.  Heisler’s store previously was owned by Joseph F. Leiter; after Heisler owned the store it was occupied by Urban Lebo father of Willis Lebo who ran the store with his father.  Later R. Bruce Hale and his son Glenn Hale ran a grocery store at this location prior to building their store along S. River Road, now the location of Dollar General Store.

The post office occupied the building in 1913; prior to this year a post office was housed in private homes.  The post office building was the former location of the I. O. O. F. Lodge, organized in 1843.  They built it in 1853 to house their lodge.

They built another lodge in 1870 on the corner of Market and North Second Street.  They sold their old building to the Halifax Bank in 1871.  The bank remained in this building until their new one was built and officially opened on February 5, 1913.
