How In Hell Can You Vote for Nixon?

A political ad that appeared in the Pine Grove Press Herald, October 26, 1972, with the caption, “If you work for a living, how in hell can you vote for Nixon?”

The ad featured a non-descript white man in a short sleeve shirt (no tie) giving four reasons why you shouldn’t vote for Richard Nixon who was the Republican candidate in the presidential election of 1972.

  1. Unfair Taxes Under Nixon
  2. Soaring Prices Under Nixon
  3. More Unemployment Under Nixon
  4. Wages Frozen Under Nixon

The ad then gave six ways that George McGovern, the Democratic candidate, “will help the worker.”

  1. McGovern has one of the best pro-labor voting records in Congress
  2. McGovern is a leader in tax reform – a bologna sandwich should be just as deductible as a martini
  3. McGovern has a positive economic policy of full employment of providing meaningful and useful jobs for every person who needs to work
  4. McGovern will work to stop runaway food prices by putting a lid on exorbitant profits and breaking up monopolies that put the squeeze on consumers
  5. McGovern will enforce tough safety standards to protect the health and safety of American workers
  6. McGovern is a leading advocate for improved health care for all Americans and is a leading advocate of the National Health Insurance Act

The ad was sponsored by the Labor Committee for the Election of McGovern-Shriver, consisting of the 34 labor or labor-related organizations that were named at the bottom of the ad.
