The danger evident in the work camps of the Midland Pennsylvania Railroad was noted in a brief article which appeared in the Harrisburg Telegraph, 15 August 1911. One of the foreign workers, alone in his “hut,” was attacked by someone described as a Negro tramp in search of food. This was the only news article located about this incident, so nothing further is known about it.

Foreigner Is Attacked With Club When He Refuses to Give Food

Elizabethville, Pennsylvania, 15 August 1911 — On Saturday shortly after the noon hour a colored tramp entered one of the huts of the Italians employed on the Midland Pennsylvania Railroad, north of this place, and demanded something to eat. He was refused, but instead of leaving he picked up a club and attacked an Italian, who was alone in the place, seriously injuring him, Not being satisfied, he dragged the Italian out of the hut and fastened him to a tree. The negro then fled, but was arrested at Berrysburg and taken to jail to await the result of the injuries afflicted.
