Jacob Huber Gristmill, Early 1800s

A photograph of the remains of the old Jacob Huber gristmill, Specktown, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.  Jacob Huber was also known as Jacob Hoover.

A gristmill on this property dates back to at least 1811 when Jacob Huber was taxed as a miller. Prior to 1810, Huber was listed in the Federal censuses for 1800 and 1790 when Lykens Township was then part of Upper Paxton Township, but the exact location of his mill cannot be determined.  In 1817, he was again taxed as a miller, and in 1820, he is recorded in Lykens Township with his wife, and his son John Huber and family were listed as tenants. Between 1818 and 1838, he owned a lot in Gratz (No. 41), in addition to the old mill property in Specktown described in this post.

The 1875 map of Lykens Township (above) shows the location of the grist mill in Specktown, which at the time was owned by Daniel Buffington, whose property is adjacent.
