Jedediah Hotchkiss, Confederate Mapmaker, and Lykens Valley School Teacher (3)

A 1846-1847 drawing of the Old Stone Church, Elizabethville, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, from the Diary of Jedediah Hotchkiss, Confederate Mapmaker.

So why is there a drawing of the Old Stone Church in the Hotchkiss Diary?

The answer comes from an e-mail received on August 21, 2021, from Evan K. Knappenberger of Virginia who also supplied the image shown above.:

It might interest you to know that this church was home and workplace of the famous Confederate mapmaker Jedediah Hotchkiss (1828-1899) in 1846-1847.  He even sketched it in his journal, an image which I am attaching here.

Knappenberger was commenting on a Civil War Blog post of February 16, 2011 describing the Old Stone Church Cemetery.

He also provided an image of the adjacent diary page which mentions Elizabethville. The complete diary is available from the Library of Congress. Additional research using that diary might provide some insights into the history of Elizabethville and the Lykens Valley.

Unfortunately, there is no compete list of the teachers who taught at the Old Stone Church, Elizabethville‘s first public school building. Now, thanks to Knappenberger’s e-mail, we can add Jedediah Hotchkiss who taught there in the school term 1846-1847.
