Korean Conflict – Richard R. Lentz – Dies in Japan, 1951

Second Son Dies In Military Service

S/Sgt, Richard R. Lentz Died in Japan, 4 February; Brother Killed 11 February 1945

S/Sgt. Richard R. Lentz, age 38, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Lentz, Center Street [Millersburg], died on 4 February 1951, in Japan.

Mr. and Mrs. Lentz received a War Department telegram on Sunday afternoon, notifying them their son had died in Japan the previous day.  The telegram stated that more details concerning his death would be forwarded by telegram as soon as possible.

On Tuesday evening a second telegram was received stating that the remains would be sent home by the first available Government transport.

The morning following the death notice, Mr. and Mrs. Lentz received a letter from their son written on 28 January, stating he was well and all right and he would like to have some reading material sent.  Included in the letter were numerous pictures taken in Korea during November and early December.

S/Sgt. Lentz was born 16 September 1912 at Millersburg, R.D.,  He was a member of Riegle’s Evangelical United Brethren Church, a graduate of the Berrysburg High School, and Harrisburg Academy.  Following his education Richard served as a Senate Page for eight years, living in Harrisburg until three months prior to his entry into the U.S. Army in August of 1946.  He trained at Biloxi Air Base, Mississippi, and Chanute Field, Indiana, before going to Korea in 1947.

The death of S/Sg. Lentz is the second war casualty in the Lentz family in the past six years.  On 11 February 1945, Ensign Eugene C. Lentz was killed in action during the invasion of Leyte, Philippine Islands.  Richard was the last of the Lentz’s seven sons to enter the U.S. Service.

S/Sgt. Lentz is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Lentz, Center Street, Millersburg, and the following brothers:  Clair R. Lentz, Goldsboro, North Carolina, who served during World War II in the Army Air Corps; Robert C. Lentz, Elizabethville, who served with the U.S. Navy; William B. Lentz, Millersburg, who served with the U.S. Ground Forces; Paul J. Lentz, of Seattle, Washington, who served with the U.S. Ground Forces, and Carl C. Lentz, Millersburg, who served with U.S. Army Air Corps.
