Lawrence Leitzel (1895-1945)

FUNERAL TODAY FOR LYKENS TOWNSHIP FARMER

Lawrence Leitzel, age 49 years, Lykens Township, farmer, died in the Geisinger Hospital, Danville, on Sunday.

Mr. Leitzel was injured in an accident, by a runaway team of horses, while he was preparing to harrow a field on his farm, northeast of Gratz, last Wednesday.

He was a war veteran, having served oversea with the army during World War I, and had been a resident of Lykens Township twenty-six years. He was a member of St. David’s Reformed Church, Hebe, and Shade Post of the American Legion, Gratz.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Alma [Moyer] Leitzel, and the following sons and daughters:  Mark E. Leitzel, stationed with the army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Clair E. Leitzel, with the army at Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania; Ray Leitzel, with the army in the Pacific area; John A. Leitzel, at home; Mrs. Nevin Straub, Lykens Township; Mrs. Ray Peiffer, of Hebe; Blanche Leitzel, Charles Leitzel, Charles Leitzel and James Leitzel, all at home.

Other survivors are two grandchildren, his father, five brothers and two sisters:  Warren Leitzel, Samuel Leitzel, and Harry Leitzel, all of Hebe; Naldy Leitzel, of Lykens Township; and David Leitzel, of Herndon, R. D.; Mrs. Ray Bensinger, of Hepler; and Ms. Earl Troutman, of Millersburg.

Funeral services will be held from the residence at 10 o’clock this Thursday morning, with further services in Simeon’s Lutheran and reformed Church at Gratz, Rev. Jacob Singer, pastor of the Herndon Reformed Charge and Rev. A. L. Zechman, pastor of the Lykens Valley Reformed Charge, will officiate.  Interment will be in the Gratz Cemetery and members of the Shade Post, American Legion, of Gratz, will conduct military rites at the grave.
