Les Brown Orchestra Plays Lykens, 1949

An article appeared in the West Schuylkill Herald, July 15, 1949, announcing that local favorite Les Brown and his orchestra would be playing Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on August 1, 1949.

LES BROWN BRINGING ORCHESTRA TO LYKENS

In a recent issue of Billboard a review was written of Les Brown’s band at the Hollywood Palladium and among other things said “the crowd here went for the band.”  You remember Doris Day who started her way up as a vocalist with Les.  Following Doris Day was Eline Wilson now a favorite on Hit Parade and Les has found another in Betty Taylor who has everything it takes to hit stardom in the very near future.  Ray Kellog with his baritone voice is loved wherever the band appears. Butch Stone and your own Clyde “Stumpy” Brown add the comedy touch and their side-splitting skits will have you roaring with laughter.  les brings his band to Lykens as a generous contribution to a community enterprise and a good night of entertainment.

Ticks are now on sale for the show August 1.

Personnel of the band follows:

Trumpets:  Frank Beach; Wes Hensel; Bob Fowler; and Bob Higgins.

Trombones:  Ray Klein; Ray Sims; Stumpy Brown; and Ralph Pfiffner.

Saxes:  Butch Stone; Jack Tucker; Abe Most; Dave Pell; and Eddie Sojerr.

Rhythm:  Geoffrey Clarkson, piano; Ray Leatherwood, bass; Tony Rizzi, guitar; and Buddy Rich, drums.

Vocalists:  Betty Taylor; Ray Kellog; Butch Stone; and Stumpy Brown.
