JOHN R. FISHER – Hosiery Mill
As serving to illustrate the manufacturing interests of Lykens, the John R. Fisher Hosiery Mill is decidedly representative. The mill was established in 1897 by Fisher and Jones, but never reached the high standard of production until in May 7, last year, when Mr. Fisher purchased his partner’s interest and placed his son, Harry R. Fisher, in charge of the business. Until that time the annual output was only about 20,000 dozen pairs; today it exceeds 50,000 dozen pairs, and this magnificent increase has been entirely due to the energetic and efficient management of Harry R. Fisher. The present factory building is equipped with the most modern machinery and appliances for the knitting of men’s half hose and gives constant employment to eighty operators, its payroll averaging $300 a week, the distribution of which is exceedingly advantageous to the commercial interests of the town. Especially during the last year the management has created a splendid and widespread reputation for the superiority of the mill’s product, and created a demand for the Fisher brand of hosiery which keeps the plant working to its full capacity. Mr. Fisher’s commercial interests at the factory are ably cared for by his son, Harry R. Fisher, who has proved himself to be the right man in the right place. His success has placed him in the front ranks of industrial managers in this section of Dauphin County.
