Lykens Township – Hoffman School Teachers, 1805-1946

2000hoffmanchurch-school-001

The Hoffman School was located north of the St. Peter (Hoffman) Reformed Church Cemetery, along the Crossroads, in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.  A brick building was built around 1879 as the first independent structure used exclusively for education at this general location.  Prior to that, church buildings and private homes were used for education, a history of which goes back to about 1805.  The name “Hoffman School” refers to education at this general place in the township, rather than government-required free education which did not begin until after 1834.  The school here closed in 1946 and pupils were transferred to the Shepley School in the township.

The photograph shown above was taken in the early 21st Century, about 60 years after the school ceased to exist. and after it had been converted to and used as a private home.

Little is known about the early teachers at this place, except the first teacher who also served as a minister to the Reformed congregation known as Hoffman’s Church.  It is hoped that by presenting a list of known teachers, that blog readers will help to identify the teachers who are missing, will confirm the names of teachers who are identified for particular years, and will provide some of the missing photographs.  As of this writing, only six class photos are posted from this school.

Also, Hoffman School pictures are sought for those years where they have not been posted here.  Scans should be sent as e-mail attachments with permission to post on this site. If possible, please identify the year of the picture and any known persons.
