Lykens – Union House, 1908

An undated colorized photograph of the Union House, Lykens, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

The following article appeared in a special Souvenir Edition of the Lykens Standard, March 13, 1908, via Newspapers.com:

UNION HOUSE – WILLIAM HECHLER JR, PROPRIETOR

About two years and a half ago William Hechler came here [Lykens] from Tower City and bought the hotel property known as the Union House, since which time he had spent over $3300 in improvements installing a handsome set of new bar fixtures, steam heat, and entirely refurbishing the house from top to bottom. Today, the Union House is one of the best equipped hotel properties in the Lykens Valley, biing heated by steam, lighted by electricity, both phones, livery stable, baths and toilets, and all other modern conveniences. The bar is well stocked with all the popular brands of case goods in liquors, and the celebrated Lykens Brewing Company’s pure malt and hop beer is on draught. Mr. Hechler is a thorough business man, has developed a strong following since he came here, and his conduct of this house has been particularly satisfactory to the people of Lykens, who realize that it is of the greatest importance that our public hostelries be under capable and experienced management. Mr. Hechler came here from Tower City, where he was for four years engaged in the same line of business. The Union is today in far better condition and transacting a larger business that ever in its history, and it is due entirely to the energetic efforts of Mr. Hechler. He has been particularly successful here, and is regarded as one of Lykens’ active and progressive hotel proprietors.
