Marie E. Buffington (1899-1949) – Secretary in Selective Service, World War II

Marie E. Buffington Dies At Gratz

Marie E. Buffington, 50, died Saturday night at her home in Gratz.  She was born in Gratz, a daughter of Henry G. Buffington and his wife, Clara [Phillips] Buffington.  She resided at 104 Walnut Street, Harrisburg for the past 24 years.

Miss Buffington was a graduate of the Central Pennsylvania Business College of Harrisburg.  She was a Federal employee of the Veterans Administration since 1923 and has been serving in Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Nashville, Tennessee, offices.  She also served in Selective Service Headquarters during the last war as a secretary to Major Frank Graf, who is assistant to Acting Director Henry L. Gross.

She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, of Harrisburg and also the Good Cheer Sunday School Class and was very active in church work.  She was also a member of the Business and Professional Girls Club of Harrisburg.

Surviving are her parents and a sister Annie, Mrs. George C. Adams, all of Gratz.

Private funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, at 2:00 p.m., from her home in Gratz. In charge of her pastor Rev. William VanHorn Davies.  Burial will be in the family plot of the Gratz Union Cemetery.
