Millersburg Ferry Sesquicentennial, 1825-1975

A wooden post card with a “wood cut” image of the Millersburg Ferry on the Susquehanna River, Millersburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The card was issued to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Ferry.

On the back of the card is text describing some of the history of the ferry. A hand-applied date stamp cancel was applied at the Millersburg Post Office, December 3, 1975, in the morning.

The first known owner was David Kramer.  he bought the ferry on December 3rd, 1825, for the amount of $60.

Up to the 1870s. the boats were poled across the river by man power.  Then in the year 1873 the first paddle wheeler was constructed.  It was the Steamboat Enterprise.

Steam was replaced by gasoline engines in the 20s.  At the same time the paddlewheels shifter from the side to the stern where they are today.

Incidentally these paddlewheels actually work.  There are no hidden screw propellers.

As of January 1971, the 146 year old Millersburg Ferry became a registered Historic Landmark.
