Millersburg – Railroad Depot – “Harry Pillow Killed Yesterday”

An undated photo post card view of the 1898 Millersburg Railroad Depot or Station, Millersburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The main passenger station (center) is on the hill and the baggage house (right) is at track level.

This photo shows more of the surrounding areas than most views of the station, particularly the houses on the hill (left, behind station). The photographer was probably C. Noll, whose images appear on many picture post cards of this era.

The unusual message on the card is as follows:

My dear Emma,

At a picnic here today.  Harry Pillow [?] was killed on the railroad yesterday.  Will write you soon.

Als.. {?]

The card was addressed to Miss Emma Kinter, 414 Seminary Avenue, Rahway, New Jersey, and was mailed from the Millersburg Post Office, 1 September 1906.

A brief article was located in the Perry County, Pennsylvania, news section of the Harrisburg Telegraph, 7 September 1906:

Harry Pillow, an extra flagman on the Pennsylvania Railroad was killed at Huntingdon, last week.  He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Pillow, Millerstown and was twenty-eight years old.  He leaves a wife and several children.

If any blog reader can add any information to this story, it is welcome.
