Panoramic View of Millersburg from Lover’s Rock

MILLERSBURG TV COMPANY

At the top of Berry’s Mountain, south of Millersburg, approximately a mile and a half east of the river, is a rock known to many generations of Millersburgers as “Lover’s Rock.”  From it, lovers dreamed the dreams of youth as they viewed the magnificent scene pictured above.

Forty years or so ago, a log cabin was built a few hundred feet east of the Rock by a group of young men from Millersburg.  On a Sunday afternoon, it was not unusual for a dozen different groups of people to hike up the mountain to visit the cabin and enjoy the view from either its porch or the Rock located nearby.

With the advent of automobiles, the popular pastime of mountain hiking decreased; the cabin deteriorated, collapsed and finally burned; the steep trail up the mountain leading to the road and thence to the Rock grew over with underbrush and then with trees.  The road from Lenkerville leading over the gap became more and more difficult to travel, and the Rock became les familiar to the youth of this community.  But the mention of its name will bring many pleasant childhood memories to the “old folks” who were reared in Millersburg.

Today the Rock and surrounding land are owned by the Millersburg TV Company which has an antenna nearby.  Here television signals are intercepted, amplified and brought down the mountain by cable to Millersburg.  Five channels — from Lancaster, Harrisburg, Baltimore and two Philadelphia stations — are brought into the homes of subscribers in Millersburg by wire connections with the cable.

The Millersburg TV Company was organized by Fred R. Helwig, president; Mark H. Miller, vice president; Gilbert A. Long, treasurer; Alfred M. Hawley, secretary; and Robert E. Woodside.
