A photograph taken in 2011 of the historical marker at the location of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Broad Street Station in Philadelphia. This was the railroad’s main station in Philadelphia and the terminal for passengers who traveled from the Lykens Valley area to the business center of the state’s largest city.
The marker is located on 15th Street between Market Street and what is now John F. Kennedy Boulevard. The view in photo is looking north on 15th Street.
The marker was placed here by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1999.
BROAD STREET STATION
Opened here, 1881, by the Pennsylvania Railroad; enlarged 1893. This was once the world’s largest railroad passenger terminal. It’s great arched train shed burned, 1923. The station and its long elevated stone track bed (the “Chinese Wall”) remained until 1952-1953.
Today, the location serves as the rail transportation center of Philadelphia, with trolley, subway and regional rail converging underground. The main rail station is at 30th Street which is served by Amtrak which has daily service to Harrisburg. At Harrisburg, Capital Area Transit (CAT) provides weekday bus service to and from Halifax, Millersburg, and Elizabethville.
