Railroad Memories of Lenker Station

The Lenkers Railroad Station, built by the Pennsylvania Railroad, was located on the east side of Lenker Station, Mohr Road, Washington Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Heading west from Elizabethville on the Lykens Valley Railroad, it was the first flag-stop station of two between Elizabethville and Millersburg.

Here are some railroad stories occurring at or around the Lenker Station as reported by the local newspapers:

From the Elizabethville Echo, October 25, 1894:

As the noon accommodation was pulling out from Lenker‘s Station yesterday, one of the axles of the locomotive was broken close to a driving wheel.  The engineer succeeded, however, in drawing his train to this place [Elizabethville], and another engine was telegraphed for.  The wreck crew arrived last evening and moved the lame “hoss.”

From the Elizabethville Echo, August 1, 1902:

THE COAL TRAIN WRECKED

A very costly wreck occurred on the Lykens Valley Railroad about two miles west of Elizabethville, on Wednesday afternoon.

The coal train, carrying probably seventy or eighty cars of coal was passing through the “cut” just below the Lenker flag station, when a flange was broken from a wheel, and the truck turning crosswise on the track, caused the loaded cars of coal to pile one on top of another as high as the telegraph poles.

Twenty-three cars were derailed, and the wreckage will probably not be cleared away for two or three days.  It is expected the tracks will be sufficiently cleared to admit the running of trains, by tonight.  The Sunbury wreck train and crew were assisting the local crew last night and today.

The trainsmen on the wrecked train all escaped without serious injury, although one of the brakemen had his nose badly bruised.

From the Elizabethville Echo, Rife News, April 16, 1908:

Claude Bechtel secured employment at McClellan.  There are now 14 board the train at Lenker’s Station.

From the Elizabethville Echo, October 27, 1910:

Grant Watson, W. J. Daniel and Edward Grubb assisted a railroad detective last week in arresting two men suspected of robbery at Lykens.  The arrest was made at Lenker‘s Station and the prisoners, Fred Kohler and George O’Gorek taken to Lykens.  After a hearing they were committed to jail….

From the Lykens Standard, March 5, 1915:

TRACK WALKER RETIRES

Daniel Eberly, track walker between Lenkers Station and Loyalton, was retired at the age of 65 by the Northern Central Railway on Monday and placed on the pension roll.  Mr. Eberly was in the maintenance of way service of the company continuously for almost 33 years.
