Rev. Ellerslie A. Lebo (1903-1954) – Authority on Church Architecture

The Rev. Ellerslie A. Lebo, Millersville Pike, widely known as an authority on church architecture and consultant and designer of some 40 churches in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, died at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

In ill health for some time, he had been admitted to Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, four weeks ago and it was there that he died.  He was fifty-one.

For the past 18 years he was pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Millersville.

Born in Gratz, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Dr. and Mrs. William Ellerslie Lebo.

SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

He attended the Gratz public schools and Wiconisco High School  He attended Muhlenberg College, where he received his A.B. degree in 1925.  He served as principal of Gratz Public Schools for the 1925-1926 term and then enrolled in the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, where he was graduated in 1929.

On 5 June 1929, he was ordained as a minister of the Lutheran Church by the Ministerium of Pensylvania in session at Scranton.

He served as pastor of the Pleasantville-Somers Point Lutheran Parish, New Jersey, from 1929 to 1933 and then, because of ill health was inactive as a minister for three years.  He regained his health and in 1936 was called to become a pastor of the Millersville Church, where he has served continuously since that time.

CONSULTING GROUP

He was a former member of the board of directors of the Good Shepherd Home, Allentown, and a member of the Consulting Committee on Architecture of the United Lutheran Church.

He was a member of the Cliosophic Society of Lancaster.  In addition to his interest in church architecture he was a student and authority on the history of railroading.

In 1929 he was married to Margaret G. Simon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burton C. Simon, Philadelphia.  Their home, “Twin Acres,” is located on the edge of Millersville Borough.

Surviving are the widow and twins, a daughter, Ann [Lebo] Dyke, wife of Samuel H. Dyke, Millersville, and a son, Burton C. Lebo, of Millersville.

Also surviving are a brother, Dr. A. A. Lebo, Neffsville, and three sisters, Mrs. Allen Walton, Millersburg, Pennsylvania; Mrs. John Kratzer, Elizabethville, Pennsylvania; and Mrs. Heaster Blyler, Millersburg, Pennsylvania.
