Rev. Jacob Edwin Scheetz – Reformed Minister from the Lykens Valley

An undated portrait photo (later colorized) of Rev. Jacob Edwin Scheetz, who at the time of the Bicentennial of Upper Paxton Township (1867-1967) was recognized as the only son of David’s United Church of Christ, Killinger, to have devoted his life to full-time service in the Reformed Church.

The following brief biographical sketch was provided by Henry J. Ditty:

He was the only son of Levi Scheetz and Catherine [Neagley] Scheetz.  He was born near Killinger, December 24, 1873.  He attended the township school and attended the high school for one year and graduated in 1892.  He spent one year at the Preparatory School at Myerstown.  He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in June 1897, and from the Theological Seminary in May 1900.

He was ordained into the ministry July 5, 1900, and installed as pastor of Grace Reformed Church, Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, where he served as pastor for four years.

He also served the Harrison City and Denmark Manor Charge, near Greensburg for 6 years.  From there he went to New Kensington, Pennsylvania, where he was also in charge of the German Department of the local high school until German was eliminated from the curriculum.

He also served as pastors of Churches of Berlin, Somerset County, Brewster, Ohio, and Everett, Pennsylvania.

He was married April 14, 1904 to Miss Gertrude Reichard of Sharpsville, Pennsylvania.  There are no children and upon reaching retirement age having no near kin he entered St. Paul’s Old Folks Home, Greenville, Pennsylvania.  While a resident of this home he entered into eternal rest during 1950 and is buried on the Cemetery Adjoining David’s Church.
