KILLED BY FALL OF COAL AT BROOKSIDE [Lykens Standard, 20 Jul 1906]
Simon Evans of Tower City, aged 43 years, employed as a miner in breast 159, West Brookside Colliery, while at work Thursday of last week, was crushed by a fall of slate and died early Friday night. Deceased is survived by his widow (nee Jennie Simmons), and six children, the youngest eight months old.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for many years; the I. O. O. F. [Odd Fellows], and United Mine Workers. The funeral took place on Monday at 2 p. m. Services were conducted at the home and in the Methodist Episcopal Church. The lodges attended in a body. Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were David Simmons and family, Mary Simmons and Pearl Simmons, Mrs. Hatten and sons Ivan Hatten and James Hatten of Philadelphia; Edward Sterling and wife, Warren Snyder, wife and son, Mr. Evans, wife and three children, Wilkes-Barre; Edward Davis of Waterbury, Connecticut. Interment was made in the Greenwood Cemetery.
