Susquehanna River Flood of 1920

From the Harrisburg Telegraph, 13 March 1920:

River to Soar Two Feet Above Local Flood Level Official Observers Say

ICE IS PASSING DOWN STREAM WITH LITTLE FURTHER DAMAGE

When the crest of the Susquehanna River Flood, which is expected to arrive at Harrisburg tomorrow, a river stage of 19 feet above low watermark will result.  This is two feet above flood stage.

This was the forecast late this afternoon of officials of the Pennsylvania State Water Supply Commission, when the 1:30 o’clock reading showed the river ranging about the 17.7 foot mark.  Forecaster E. R. Demian, of the Harrisburg Weather Bureau, has also predicted a maximum river stage of 19 feet.

Water Rushing Down

Torrents of water from the headstreams of the Susquehanna caused by heavy rains and snow that has been washed into the tributaries, are sweeping toward this city at a rapid rate.  No additional damage may be expected from ice unless gorges develop.
