Conrail, or the Consolidated Rail Corporation, was created by the Federal Government in 1976 in an effort to support potentially profitable freight railroads that at the time were in bankruptcy, including the Penn Central Transportation Company which operated the old rail line along the east bank of the Susquehanna River running from Harrisburg to Sunbury and through the towns of Halifax and Millersburg in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Conrail was in operation from its inception in 1976 to 1999, when its routes were split between CSX Corporation and the Norfolk Southern Railway.
The map shown above is of the area in and around Halifax. The Conrail line was the only railroad in operation in the area. Other than Halifax, which was directly served by the railroad, the map shows Powels Valley, Waynesville, Enterline, Fisherville, Enders and Carsonville, none of which had railroad service.
