A photograph from the 1880s of the Charles Knecht Store and Tower City Post Office, Tower City, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
Charles Knecht (1841-1915) is standing in the doorway of the store. He was a Civil War veteran who was appointed postmaster by President Grover Cleveland, October 26, 1885 and served until September 6, 1889, when he was replaced with a Republican appointee. Knecht was re-appointed on May 11, 1894, by the re-elected Cleveland, and served until he was replaced on July 6, 1898. Standing in the doorway to the upstairs residence is Pauline “Lena” [Eisensteck] Knecht (1844-1909), wife and mother. There are four unidentified children in the photograph. The wagons outside the store were used to transport goods purchased at the store.
At the left of the photo is the Isaac Patrick Clothing Store.
