A photograph taken around 1903 picturing the newly constructed fire house of Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, Tower City, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. It was located on the south side of Grand Avenue between First Street and Second Street.
The two men in the photo are not identified.
The fire company was organized in May 1895, with its first officers being: W. J. Henry, president; James Lewis, vice president; I. Patrick, treasurer; E. A. Thompson, secretary; Charles Fegley, foreman; James Ganly, D. E. Messner, Robert Waters, W. W. Frank, Daniel Berger, D. P. Thompson, and Peter Kendall, assistant foremen. From 1895 to the erection of the first fire house, the group met at the Opera House and at the primary school building.
In 1949, lots were purchased on the opposite side of Grand Avenue and the company proceeded to erect a one story building to house the fire trucks, rescue vehicle, ambulance and fire equipment.
The original building continued in use as a grille room and meeting place. The building still stands today but is disguised with siding.
