RAILROADS
A railroad was built between Tremont and Pine Grove in 1827 with wooden rails with strap iron nailed on it. The road was used mainly for the transportation of coal and timber and operated by horsepower until 1848 when motive power was brought into use. The railway known as the Swatara Railroad connected with workings in the upper Swatara and Lorberry region and coal was hauled to the Union Canal in Pine Grove.
The rapid growth of the coal region necessitated better rail facilities and a line was built from Tremont to Lebanon and Tremont had excellent railroads with eighteen passenger trains daily except Sunday. With the increase in automobile travel, passenger service dropped off and later truck deliveries cut into the revenue of the railroads and they went into debt and services were curtailed. Today there is freight traffic on that line.
