William E. Buffington (1873-1938) – Former U.S. Post Office Comptroller

Services Planned for William E. Buffington

Funeral services for William E. Buffington, former comptroller of the United States Post Office Department of Washington, who died at the home of his brother, George F. Buffington, Elizabethville, on Wednesday, following a long illness, will be held at the Elizabethville residence, West Main Street, at 7:30 o’clock this evening. The Rev. J. M. Walters, of Denver, pastor of Trinity United Brethren Church, Elizabethville, will officiate. Further services will be held from the S. H. Hines and Company Funeral Home in Washington, at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be made at Washington.

Buffington, who was 65 years old was a son of the late Isaiah Buffington and Mary [Kemmerer] Buffington, and was born at Elizabethville, March 7, 1863, where he spent the earlier years of his life. He was married to Mathilda Acker, February 28, 1911, at Washington, who died almost three years ago. Buffington was a member of Trinity United Brethren Church, the Masonic Lodge, Almas Shrine and Odd Fellows Lodge of Washington.

A graduate of George Washington University, Washington, he was admitted to the bar of the District of Columbia Supreme Court. He entered the Post Office Department at Washington in 1906, serving in various capacities. Prior to his appointment to the postal service, he was employed in the office of auditor of the Southern Railway and in the War and Interior Departments.

Held Several Posts

He was Superintendent of the Division of Finance at the Post Office from 1913 to 1922 and was Director of Postal Savings from 1922 to 1926. He was appointed Comptroller of the Post Office Department by President Coolidge in 1926, which post he held until the expiration of Coolidge’s term in 1928. Buffington retired from public service February 28, 1934.

He is survived by one sister and three brothers, Miss Nellie Buffington, George F. Buffington, Ray K. Buffington, and Lewis C. Buffington, all of Elizabethville.
