FORMER PUBLISHER DIED AT TOWER CITY
William F. Knecht, president of the Tower City National Bank, died at his home in Tower City last Thursday night at the age of 83 years.
Mr. Knecht was a native of Pottsville but had resided in Tower City most of his life. As a young man he was employed at the Tower City colliery and in 1898 established the West Schuylkill Herald which he operated until 1922 when he sold the business to his son, William K. Knecht, the present owner.
Mr. Knecht was also one of the organizers of the Tower City National Bank, and had served as its president the past ten years.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was affiliated with the Masonic Lodge of Tremont and the Odd Fellows Lodge of Tower City.
Survivors are his wife, Mr. Alice [Klinger] Knecht; two daughters, Mrs. Albert Erb of Pottstown; Mrs. Philip Borke, Hershey; three sons, William K. Knecht, Tower City; Roy L. Knecht, Heavener, Oklahoma; and Karl E. Knecht, of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. A brother, Harry Knecht of West Collingswood, New Jersey, and one sister, Mrs. John J. Leonard of Tower City, also survives.
Services were held from the Dreisigacker Funeral Home, Tower City, at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon. Rev. Israel Yost, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church officiated and interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery at Tower City.
