World War II – Lawrence C. Engle – Killed in Action

Lawrence C. Engle

 

From a local newspaper (probably Elizabethville Echo) at the time of his death, about 8 March 1945:

PVT. L. ENGLE REPORTED KILLED IN GERMANY

Mrs. Estella Engle, of Lykens, was advised by the War Department last week, that her husband, Pvt. Lawrence C. Engle, 23, has been reported killed in action in Germany, 8 March 1945.

Pvt. Engle was a native of Lykens Township, and a son of Calvin Engle and Catharine [Hoffman] Engle.  He was graduated from the Lykens Valley Joint Vocational High School, Berrysburg, Class of 1939.

Prior to entering the army 31 December 1943, he had been employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company at Steelton.  He had been overseas since November 1944.

Survivors are his wife and a daughter, Eleanor Engle, 3, of Lykens; his parents, who reside in Lykens Township; three brothers, Earl Engle, of Gratz; Marlin Engle, Elizabethville, R.D.; and Robert Engle, at home; and two sisters, Miss Sara Engle, at home; and Mildred [Engle] Lahr, Mrs. Ray Lahr, Elizabethville, R.D.

Grave Marker.  Lawrence C. Engle is buried at Gratz Union Cemetery, Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.  He was born 19 October 1921 and was Killed in Action in World War II, 8 March 1945.  He is buried with his parents:  Calvin L. Engle (1884-1950) and Catherine [Hoffman] Engle (1888-1973), both of Lykens Township.  Findagrave:  #60199091.
