Wiconisco boy graduate[s] from Penn State College at age 21…. Robert L. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Miller, who receives Arts and Letters degree.

From the Harrisburg Telegraph, 11 February 1944:

Wiconisco Gunner Wins Two Decorations

Announcement was made today of the award of the Air Medal to which an Oak Leaf Cluster has been added, to Staff Sergeant Robert L. Miller of Wiconisco, for “exceptionally meritorious achievement while participating in five bomber combat missions over Europe.”  He is stationed somewhere in England with the Eighth Air Force as a ball turret gunner on a Flying Fortress.

Sgt. Miller, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Miller, Wiconisco, is a graduate of Penn State College, and was employed as a clerk by Bethlehem Steel, Lackawanna, New York.  His wife, Mrs. Mary J. Miller, is living in New York.

Wiconisco Flier Given Air Medal for Action

Wiconisco — An Air Medal an d Oak Leaf Cluster has been awarded Staff Sergeant Robert L. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs Samuel H. Miller, Wiconisco, for meritorious achievement while participating in bomber combat missions over Europe.  He is stationed in England.

A graduate of Wiconisco High School and Pennsylvania State College, Sergeant Miller was employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company at Lackawanna, New York, before entering the Air Forces.

COUNTY FLIER CITED AGAIN

WICONISCO — Staff Sergeant Robert L. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Miller, here, has been awarded an additional Oak Leaf Cluster after completing 15 missions over Europe.  A ball turret gunner on a Flying Fortress, Sergeant Miller’s wife resides in York.

S/Sgt. Robert L. Miller, a ball turret gunner on a Flying Fortress, has been awarded an Oak Leaf cluster to the Air Medal for completing fifteen bomber operational missions over enemy-occupied Europe, it was announced recently somewhere in England.  His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Miller, live in Wiconisco; his wife in York.

Wiconisco — Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Miller, Wiconisco, that their son Staff Sergeant Robert L. Miller, serving overseas as a turret gunner, is missing in action since 3 March 1944, following a mission over Germany….

Wiconisco Flier, Holder of Air Medal, Missing

WICONISCO — Staff Sgt. Robert L. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Miller, is reported missing in action over Germany, according to word received by his parents.

Sergeant Miller, a turret gunner with a bombing squadron, enlisted in the Army Air Forces in September, 1942, and trained at Tyndal Field, Florida, and Spokane, Washington.  He was sent overseas last Fall, and was stationed in England.

Recently, he was awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster to his Air Medal, after completing 15 missions over Germany.

Staff Sergeant Miller, 30 years old, is a graduate of Wiconisco High School and Pennsylvania State College.  He took post graduate work at University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University.  Before enlisting he was employed at Buffalo.

Wiconisco Gunner Reported Missing in European Area

S/Sgt. Robert L. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Miller, Wiconisco, has been missing in action over Europe since 4 March 1944, according to a War Department telegram.

He was recently awarded an additional Oak Leaf Cluster after competing fifteen missions, as a ball turret gunner, over Europe, and also the Distinguished Service Cross.  Sgt. Miller, who enlisted in the Air Corps, September 1942, has been overseas since last October.

The Miller’s have two other sons in the service.  Gunnery Sergeant George Miller, a Marine, stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, had been wounded at Guadalcanal and returned to the States.  Pfc. Vernon Miller is with an infantry outfit at San Luisabospo, California.

The boys’ father has been active in civic and community affairs for many years.  His father, S. H. Miller, started one of Wiconisco‘s oldest mercantile establishments in 1868 and Miller took over the business in 1904.

Wiconisco Sergeant Is Home on Furlough

Wiconisco — S/Sgt. Robert Miller, Army Air Force, is spending a 60-day furlough here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Miller.

He was accompanied here by his wife.  At the end of his furlough he will report in Miami Beach, Florida, for medical treatment and reassignment.  He holds the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and a Presidential Unit Citation.

Widow, Five Children Share S. H. Miller Estate

The $7000 estate of Samuel H. Miller, late of Wiconisco Township, former member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, will be shared by his widow, Mrs. Jennie Miller, and five grandchildren, according to his will probated in the Courthouse yesterday.  Two of the four sons, all of whom are in the armed service, were named as executors.  The widow and daughter, Miss Louise Miller, reside in Wiconisco.  The sons are Vernon Miller, William Miller, George Miller, and Robert L. Miller.

From the Harrisburg Evening News, 28 December 1945:

Lone Surviving Civil War Veteran Is 99

Henry M. Maurer, Dauphin County’s only surviving veteran of the Civil War, who observed his ninety-ninth birthday anniversary yesterday, is shown with two of his five grandsons who served in World War II.  The servicemen are Private William G. Miller, left, who served in the Marine Corps, and Staff Sergeant Robert L. Miller, who had been a prisoner of the Germans.  Both are now out of the service.  Maurer resides with a daughter, Mrs. Samuel H. Miller, Wiconisco, where this picture was taken last summer while the two servicemen were home on furlough.

From the Gazette & Daily (York, Pennsylvania), 10 November 1954:

Robert L. Miller

Robert Lee Miller, 41, husband of Mary Jane Miller, York R.D. 10, died suddenly at 7:40 a.m. yesterday at the home of his mother, Mrs. Jennie M. Miller, Wiconisco, Dauphin County, where he had been visiting.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by three children at home; and the following brothers and sisters:  Vernon J. Miller and William C. Miller, both of Wiconisco; George M. Miller, Springfield, Massachusetts; and Mrs. Louise Tennant, Los Angeles, California.

A salesman for Sears Roebuck and Company, Mr. Miller was a member of First Methodist Church and White Rose Lodge 706, Free and Accepted Masons.

His pastor, Rev. Edgar Henry, will officiate at funeral services at 2 p.m. Friday at Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 East Market Street.  Interment will be in Mt. Rose Cemetery.
