Lykens Valley Cousins of President Barack Obama

On his mother’s side, Barack H. Obama, 44th President of the United States, is supposedly descended from Johann Pieter Straub (1695-c1760s), who arrived at Philadelphia from Germany in 1733, and his wife Anna Maria Barbara Hoffman (c1696-?).

Research has shown that many descendants of this Straub immigrant ended up in the Lykens Valley.  Thus any line of descent from the immigrant couple would have a genetic relationship to the President Obama – cousins to the degree of generations from the common ancestors.  Note that there was a change in the spelling of the Straub surname to Stroup in the Obama ancestry.  In some of the other lines of descent, the surname remained Straub.

The following information was found on Ancestry.com, and in most respects has been confirmed:

Johann Pieter STRAUB (1695-c1760s) = Anna Barbara Marie HOFFMAN

Johann Philip STRAUB (c1730s-?) = Barbara ? (?-?)

John STROUP (c1764-1832) = Mary STEELY (1767-1835)

William STROUP (1785-1863) = Ann THOMAS (1790-1871)

John A. STROUP (1814-1851) = Eliza Jane CLEMMENS (?-?)

Jacob Mackey DUNHAM (1824-1907) = Louise Eliza STROUP (1837-1901)

Jacob William DUNHAM (1863-1936) = Mary Ann KEARNEY (1869-1936)

Ralph Waldo Emerson DUNHAM (1894-1970) = Ruth Lucille ARMOUR (1900-1926)

Stanley Armour DUNHAM (1918-1992) = Madelyn Lee PAYNE (1922-2008)

Barack Hussein OBAMA Sr. (1936-1982) = Stanley Ann DUNHAM (1942-1995)

Barack Hussein OBAMA Jr. (1961-Living) = Michele LaVaughn ROBINSON

After arriving in Pennsylvania in 1733, the immigrants, Johann Pieter STRAUB (1695-c1760s) and Anna Barbara Marie HOFFMAN, with several children who had been born in Germany, had at least four more children who were born in Pennsylvania.  The parents died and were buried in Pennsylvania; several of the children remained in Pennsylvania and married children from other early immigrant families, thus producing descendants, many of whom are in still in the Lykens Valley today.  These descendants carry not only the Straub or Stroup surname, but also the surnames of their spouses.

In the Barack Obama ancestry shown above, John STROUP (c1764-1832) and Mary STEELY (1767-1835) were both born in Pennsylvania, but moved to Ohio where they died and are buried.  The son of John STROUP (c1764-1832), William STROUP (1785-1863), was born in Pennsylvania, but moved to Indiana where he died and is buried. His son, John A. STROUP (1814-1851), was born in Ohio, but died and is buried in Indiana.
