FUNERAL FOR COL. BALL, TOWER CITY NATIVE
Col. John H. Ball, age 65 years, U.S. Army, retired, died at his home in Williamsport. 28 February [1953].
Colonel Ball was a son of the late Jacob Ball and Katie [Kiehl] Ball and was a native of Tower City. He attended the Tower City schools and enlisted in the army in 1916.
He was wounded while serving with the army in Europe during World War I, and following the close of the war served with the occupation forces in Germany.
Prior to World War II, he was an instructor at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and also served at bases in Hawaii and the Philippines, and was also a military advisor for Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek in China.
He was stationed in the Philippines at the outbreak of World War II where he was taken a prisoner of war by the Japanese. Following his retirement in 1946, Col. Ball resided in Williamsport.
He is survived by two sisters and four brothers: Mrs. Helen Taylor and Ralph W. Ball, of Allentown; Mrs. Stella Purnell of Tamaqua; Charles Ball, of Philadelphia; Amos Ball of Williamsport; and George W. Ball of Lewisburg.
Services were held at Williamsport Thursday morning with Rev. Mr. Houser officiating. Interment was made in the Greenwood Cemetery at Tower City.
