Gordon Foster (1926-2009) – Teacher & Hall of Fame Coach of Upper Dauphin

ELIZABETHTOWN- Gordon E. Foster, 83, of One Masonic Drive, passed away Friday, January 23, 2009 in the Masonic Home. He was formerly of Elizabethville, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

He was born January 17, 1926 in Wiconisco, Dauphin County, son of the late Samuel A. Foster, and Florence M. [Gordon] Foster.

He was a retired Teacher for the Upper Dauphin Area School District. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Elizabethville and had served on the church council. He had memberships with the F & AM, Ashlar Lodge, Lykens; He was the tour leader with the Penn Pals of the Mid Penn Bank.

He had coached basketball for Lykens, Upper Dauphin, UDA, Lebanon Valley College and returned to UDA until his retirement; He was the social studies teacher in Gratz, Lykens, Upper Dauphin, then UDA; He was an admissions counselor and coach for the women’s softball team at Lebanon College. He was Inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame; The Elizabethtown College Ira Herr Athletic Hall of Fame, has a portrait in Upper Dauphin’s Hall of Fame and the UDA high school gymnasium was dedicated (December 2003) in his name.

He was a tour leader for the American Institute for Foreign Studies, Greenwich, Connecticut since 1970. He participated with Foreign Exchange Student placement and housed students at his residence. He was a certified water safety instructor for the American Red Cross. He frequently attended the Final 4 and was a WW II Naval Vet.

Surviving are 2 sons, Greg E. Foster, husband of Janet L. Foster, Lancaster and, James A. Foster, husband of Lisa Foster, Ashland, Virginia; Daughter, Cynthia E. Boyne, and companion, Mark Mathews, Mechanicsburg; Daughter-in-Law, Denise Foster, Brooklyn, New York; 2 sisters, Elma Moore, widow of Tom Moore, Elizabethtown and Frances McNamara, wife of Vince McNamara, Harrisburg; five Grandsons; three Great-Granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by, son, Lanny G. Foster and sister Carrie Schwalm, wife of the late Warren Schwalm . Services will be held at Salem Lutheran Church on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at 11 AM. Interment with military honors at Maple Grove Cemetery, Elizabethville.
