Jacob Shade Farm, 1875

An undated photograph, probably taken at the beginning of the 21st century, of farm buildings on what was in 1875, the 75 acre farm of Jacob Shade.

Since 1875, the acreage of the farm was reduced.  However, the original grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to Henry Umholtz, warranted in 1787, was in two tracts, and the 75 acre Jacob Shade farm of 1875 consisted of land from both tracts.

Jacob Shade‘s farm was located along Specktown Road in the southwest quadrant of Lykens Township, just west of the border of Gratz as marked on the 1875 map cut shown above.  Note: The town of Gratz is the gray shaded area at the right in the map cut.
