JACOB STEIN
Jacob Stein, the oldest citizen of this place, passed away at the home of his son, C. M. Stein on West Main Street, last Friday [22 January 1915], from the effects of an attack of paralysis two weeks previous. Mr. Stein celebrated his 88th birthday on January 10th, and up to the time of his affliction was quite active, being about town every day when the weather permitted.
Deceased was born at Springville, Schuylkill County, and spent his entire life in this section. Sixty years ago he was married to Joanna Umholtz, daughter of John Umholtz. They came to Lykens 48 years ago. Mr. Stein having secured employment at his trade of carpenter in the car shops. When these were abandoned he secured work at the mines in a similar capacity and ceased work only a few years ago. He was a man whom it was a pleasure to meet, always having a kind greeting and pleasant smile for all, and his absence from our midst will be felt by all.
Deceased wa tht father of two sons, Jonathan Stein, who died 17 years ago, and C. M. Stein, proprietor of Stein’s Store, this borough. His wife preceded him five years ago.
The funeral was held from the home of his son Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Rev. Slinghoff of Christ reformed Church, officiating. Interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Friends and relatives from out-of-town attending the funeral were: Mrs. Newton Reber, Mrs. James Shrack, nieces, and George Stein, nephew, of Lewisburg; Mrs. Clark Hoff, Millersburg; Preston Artz and wife, Gratz; Misses Lizzie Reigle and Savilla Reigle, Berrysburg; Stanley E. Oberender and two sons, John Oberender and Oliver Oberender, Freeland; Dr. G. R. Stein, Palmerton; and C. J. Hogman, Harrisburg.
