From the West Schuylkill Herald (Tower City), February 9, 1962:
SHOP N PLAY CENTER TO OPEN AT LYKENS NEXT THURSDAY
The largest commercial development in this area will be formally opened on February 15 [1962] at 105-111 West Main Street, Lykens. Known as the “Lykens Valley Shop N Play Center” it will be a combination of a gigantic self-service food store and a twelve-lane bowling center. Its promoters are Ernest Scheib and Richard Klinger Jr., both Lykens merchants. Scheib’s Grocery Store has been moved to the new location and will occupy the front of the remodeled former Lykens Valley Motors building. To the rear of the self-service store will be the Brunswick automatic pin setter bowling alleys.
The opening ceremony will be held at 9:30 a. m., with a ribbon cutting and remarks by prominent Lykens officials and the center owners. For the opening day there will be 85 free prizes awarded and each adult householder attending will be given 50 free trading stamps.
The management cordially invites all people in Upper Dauphin and Lower Schuylkill County communities to attend the opening, visit the store and inspect the bowling alleys. Already leagues are forming to use the alleys, and all keglers welcome into the area this modern center to fill a long-felt need.
