OUR NEW COMMUNITY HOTEL AT LYKENS

The opening of the Community Hotel in Lykens fills a want much needed in this community for a long time. This new modern fire-proof hotel in construction, appearance and cuisine can not help but appeal to the tastes of the most exacting and a hostelry to which the people of Lykens and vicinity can well point with pride. Except in size, it will compare with the best hotels in the State.

The building is four stories in height, with basement, and contains 46 bed rooms, all but seven being connected with baths. All rooms have running water.

In the basement there will be a barber shop, billiard room, and grill room.

The office and lounge room faces Main Street and is strictly up-to-date. It has a tile floor, the best of office furniture and draperies of velour damask in color to harmonize with the color scheme of the room. There is a mezzanine floor on the east and south ends of the lobby. All the curtains on the first floor are of cream colored mohair and makes an appearance pleasing to the eye. There is an elevator installed in the building.

The dining room should be seen to be appreciated. The draperies are of silk damask with gold brain trimmings and in harmony with the other appointments in the room. The furniture is mahogany and so arranged that the guests wishing to dine by themselves can be accommodated.

The Coffee Room or cafeteria is located on the Market Street side of the building. This is modern in every respect and everything in season will be served to the public at reasonable prices.

The hotel will have its own ice plant and the kitchen is equipped with everything needed to make this department as sanitary and up-to-date as one could wish.

The First National Bank has leased the corner store room and the Community Men’s Shop occupies the other store room.

The Parade Tonight

There is quite a bit of talk thruout the valley of the parade, which is scheduled from Millersburg to Tremont over the Lykens Valley Trail. This parade, which has been made up by citizens of Lykens, is the forerunner of one of the largest boosting campaigns in this section, and it is with the spirit of friendship and cooperation that Lykens and vicinity has taken the initiative which will, without question, benefit the entire valley.

The Committee which has been working on the parade has been so successful in securing cars, in that it possibly may be necessary to make a column in two sections, the first section which will go to Millersburg and the second to Tremont. This monstrous demonstration will not only be heard thruout the valley through the natural course of newspaper publicity, but the physical noise which will no doubt be heard through this vicinity, together with horns, noisemakers and the illuminating with red fire, will create a spirit of good will throughout this community.

As the parade passes through each town, a stop of a few moments will be made and selections by the band be played, and through the interest that seems to be displayed, there is no doubt but that each town will turn out in large numbers to welcome the pilgrims who are opening the Lykens Valley Trail.

Open to the Public

The Hotel Lykens will throw open its doors to the public at 5 P.M., Saturday, July 3rd.

A program, as given below, of both patriotic and civic interest will be given, the numbers of which have been carefully chosen by the hotel committee:

  • Music by the Band and patriotic songs by the local school children.
  • Presentation of a silk American Flag by the president of the hotel, Mr. R. Coble.
  • Acceptance and address by Assistant District Attorney Keen.
  • Flag raising and twenty-one gun salute will announce the opening of the hotel to the public for inspection.

The public acceptance of the hotel will be signalized by the sounding of the Lykens and Wiconisco fire alarms, the ringing of bells and the blowing of horns.

Open for Business

The hotel will be open for business Monday, July 5th. A special holiday dinner will be served from 11:30 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. at $1.25 a plate. Why not take dinner at the hotel Monday and show your patronage that you appreciate the efforts of the management to put Lykens on the map. The menu is printed in advertisement on last page of this paper.

The culinary department is in the hands of a first-class chef. Ernest Sattler will do his best to satisfy the appetite of those who patronize the hotel.

Informal Opening

Invitations have been sent out for the informal opening Friday evening, July 9th. A reception starts at 5:30 and dinner will be served at 8 o’clock. Music will be furnished by the Penn-Harris Orchestra
