This station opened in 1933 and replaced the old West Philadelphia Station of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Some trains from Harrisburg terminated at 30th Street while others, until 1952, terminated at Broad Street Station, across the Schuylkill River and in Center City adjacent to City Hall. To get to Broad Street Station, trains had to traverse the Filbert Street Viaduct, derogatorily referred to as the “Chinese Wall.” Broad Street Station was razed in 1953.
Travelers from the Lykens Valley to Philadelphia would have ended their journey at 30th Street Station which is located at the beginning of the railroad’s “Main Line.”
