A photograph taken around 1910 of the “Hermit of the Blue Mountains,” Benjamin Loeb, preparing his dinner. The visitor, at left, is Levi Ritzman, a storekeeper in Strausstown, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
Loeb set up camp along the Appalachian Trail near Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The area was generally known as a “no man’s land.”
