The Ku Klux Klan at the Jennie Kissinger Funeral, 1925

A newspaper photograph from March 31, 1925, of the Ku Klux Klan’s participation in the funeral of Jennie Kissinger at the Penbrook Cemetery, Penbrook, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The photo appeared in the Harrisburg Telegraph of that date. Note: if anyone has a better copy of this photo, it can be posted here.

The photo caption reads:

KU KLUX WOMEN FORM GUARD OF HONOR AT BURIAL OF MEMBER

Forming a large cross, members of the Women of the Ku Klux Klan yesterday advanced to the grave in the Penbrook Cemetery prepared for Mrs. Jennie Kissinger, and participated in an impressive Klan burial ceremony.

Mrs. Kissinger, who died last Thursday, lived at 623 North Eighteenth Street.  Prior to the burial service yesterday, a number of Klanswomen in full regalia formed an avenue for the funeral procession.  The white robed figures were assigned in the form of a cross and then marched to the grave.  A floral cross made of white and red roses, bearing the name of the order, was placed at the head of the grave, and a large American flag stationed at the foot.  Following the ceremony the women marched from the cemetery.
